Antioxidant-rich drinks have been in the headlines for ages, and they’re here to stay. Blended antioxidant-rich drinks and smoothies are a great way to stock up on your daily allotment of healthy fruits and veggies. And I’m sharing eight of my favorite recipes from other bloggers with you so you can make them yourself!
How to Shop for Antioxidant Fruits & Veggies
It’s as simple as A, B, and C to select fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants:
Antioxidants = Bright Colors.
Just let your eyes be your guide while you browse the produce and frozen food aisles. Bright green spinach, yellow mangoes, crimson peppers, and purple grapes are just a few examples of some fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidants.
Why Drink Antioxidant Smoothies?
Antioxidants help maintain maximum health in our brains and other vital organs by helping prevent the cell damage that naturally occurs as our bodies age.
Over time, our cells are damaged by free radicals, which leads to inflammation. Inflammation can cause chronic diseases like cancer and heart disease and has been linked with Alzheimer’s disease.
Using smoothies to get your daily dose of antioxidants can give you more energy, improve your digestion, and help with weight loss.
Smoothies are a great way to pack a variety of nutritious fruits and vegetables into a delicious form that is quick and easy to make.
So if you’re trying to eat healthier or want to jump-start your immune system, whip up an antioxidant-rich drink or smoothie that can help give your body the nutrients it needs.
What Are Some Antioxidants I Should Add to My Drink or Smoothie?
Some great antioxidants to add to your smoothie are:
- Sweet potatoes
- Berries (like blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries)
- Bananas (and even the peels!)
- Nuts (like almonds and pecans)
- Chia Seeds
If possible, try using at least two of these antioxidants as a minimum – more is better!
Be aware that almonds, flax seeds, and chia seeds contain a fair amount of fat, so go easy on these if you’re watching your diet. A teaspoon of seeds is fine, as is a very small handful of almonds.
If you are adding nuts (like almonds) to your smoothies, add them first, so they get well-blended. And if you’re adding seeds (like chia, hemp, flax, etc.), add these last to other ingredients. If you’re like me, you want to avoid lumps or chunks in your smoothies, and I find this process to work best.
