What Makes A Smoothie Alkaline?

Remember science class back in high school? Way back then, we learned about basic and acidic substances.

An alkaline smoothie is simply a smoothie that helps make the acid in your body more neutral – or in other words, basic. An alkaline smoothie has a high pH level which can help alleviate acidity.

How Do I Know If My PH levels are Off?

Here are a couple of ways to determine if your pH levels are off:

  1. Use a pH testing kit: These kits are available online or at most drugstores. They include pH test strips and a chart to compare your results. Just follow the instructions on the kit to measure the pH of your urine or saliva.
  2. Check for physical symptoms that may indicate that your pH levels are off. For example, if you have itchy skin or keep getting infections, your pH levels might be too low. On the other hand, if you are getting acid reflux or have frequent heartburn, your pH levels may be too high.

According to Dr. Patty Powers, M.D., a urine pH should be between 6.5 – 7.0, and a normal saliva pHis between 6.8-7.4

Therefore, if your pH levels are outside of these ranges, then it could be an indicator of an underlying health issue.

So if you’re concerned about your pH levels, then it might be a good idea to consult your healthcare professional.

Why Try Alkaline Smoothies?

Alkaline smoothies are not only scrumptious but also simple to create. These are some of the healthiest smoothies you can consume and are great for a detox!

An alkaline smoothie will be less likely to aggravate GERD or acid reflux. But adding fruits and juices can make your smoothie very acidic. If you frequently have indigestion, you must be sure you’re not drinking acidic smoothies.

Generally, Smoothies Are Acidic.

Smoothies created with fruits such as bananas, berries, and orange juice will typically be acidic and a poor choice for someone with acid reflux. Therefore, if you suffer from GERD, indigestion, or acid reflux, avoid smoothies with too many of these fruits or an orange juice base.

Another tip is to add almond milk to your smoothies. Almond milk has an alkaline makeup and can help balance your stomach’s acid by making a fruity smoothie less acidic.

Why I’m In Love With Alkaline Smoothies

Personally, I’ve been on a smoothie journey for a long time, but I recently developed a very acidic stomach. I couldn’t figure out how I could be eating so well yet feeling so rotten. After doing tons of research and going through quite a few medical tests, I figured out the problem. My pH levels were super low – consequently, it was time to change my morning routine.
